Rhinoplasty & Revision Rhinoplasty

As the central feature on our face, a nose simple cannot be hidden or ignored. Genetics play a large role in how our nose develops, but many people have suffered an accident, illness or injury that has caused their nose to become misshapen. Unfortunately, many people say that they are unhappy with the shape, size or general appearance of their nose, causing them to lack confidence and self-esteem. Rhinoplasty gives patients the ability to have their nose reshaped and recontoured to give them the silhouette and image that they strive for.

What is rhinoplasty?

Also referred to as a ‘nose job’, rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic surgical procedures in the U.S. During rhinoplasty, a number of different elements of the nose many be changed, including:

- making it smaller (nose reduction), by removing some of the cartilage and bone.

- making it bigger (nose augmentation), by taking cartilage from the ears and bone from the hips or elbow to build the nose up.

- changing the shape of the nose by breaking the bone and rearranging the cartilage.

- changing the angle between the nose and lip.

Am I a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty?

In order to assess your candidacy for any cosmetic surgery procedure, including rhinoplasty, it will be necessary for you to attend a comprehensive consultation with Dr. LaBruna. During this appointment, you will be asked about your full medical history, as well as having the opportunity to discuss your goals for the procedure.

Rhinoplasty procedure

The exact format of your rhinoplasty surgery will depend on the cosmetic changes that you wish to make. However, all surgeries will be performed under anesthetic in order to keep you comfortable for the duration of the process.

Rhinoplasty surgery involves making either one cut across the skin between the nostrils – this is known as ‘open rhinoplasty’, or tiny cuts inside the nostrils – ‘known as closed rhinoplasty’. A closed rhinoplasty is normally the most popular as it causes less swelling and no visible scarring, but Dr LaBruna will be able to advise you which type of incision is the most appropriate for the changes that you would like to make.

Recovery from rhinoplasty

It is normally advisable to take off work for up to two weeks after your rhinoplasty surgery, although it may be several months before you can see the full effect and even longer before the swelling entirely disappears. Bruising, swelling and some discomfort are all to be expected in the days after your surgery, and over the counter pain relief and anti-inflammatories will help to alleviate some of your symptoms.

Dr. LaBruna will provide you with specific instructions with regards to your care in the days following your procedure, and these should be followed exactly to give you the best recovery and results from your rhinoplasty.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most complicated cosmetic surgery procedures, and many patients find that they are unhappy with the results from their initial surgery.
